Heba Faced Female Genital Mutilation in Sudan If Her Asylum Case Was Denied

Like many lawyers, Sean Olender had long read about the work of Karen Musalo, Professor of Law and Director, Center for Gender and Refugee Studies at Hastings College of Law at the University of California at San Francisco.

Heba's family worried she'd be unable to marry if not circumcised. They were going to physically force her to do it.
Sean had long admired the work of Karen Musalo, Professor of Law and Director, Center for Gender and Refugee Studies at Hastings College of Law at the University of California at San Francisco. Professor Musalo argued an important asylum case called Matter of Kasinga before the Board of Immigration Appeals in 1996, two years before Sean began practicing law.

Some African and Muslim cultures believe that female circumcision is necessary to ensure monogamy by depriving women of sexual enjoyment. The practice is also called female genital mutilation and can be the basis for a successful asylum claim
