Citizenship and Naturalization

Naturalization is the process where a foreign national becomes a citizen.  There are very good reasons to seek citizenship if you plan to remain in the United States permanently. 

Generally any permanent resident may apply for citizenship after residing and being physically present in the United States for certain periods of time.  Applicants who gained residence through a spouse or stepparent must be a resident for three years and physically present for 18 months before being eligible for naturalization. 8 USC 1430. Those who obtained residence through an avenue other than marriage must reside in the United States for five years and be physically present for three. 8 USC 1427.
